Patent Leather: What It Is, and What It Is Not
Patent leather is leather carrying a high-gloss film on its surface. The hide underneath is real. The mirror shine is not leather at all, it is a coating, and almost everything people notice about patent leather comes from that coating rather than from the leather beneath it.
Understanding that one fact answers most questions about it, including why it eventually turns sticky.
What is patent leather?
Patent leather is a finished leather with a glossy, non-porous surface applied over the grain. Originally the shine came from layers of varnish. In modern production the film is a polymer, most often polyurethane, applied and cured to a mirror finish.
The leather beneath can be almost any grade, and frequently is not the best available, because the coating covers everything. This is worth knowing: a flawless patent surface tells you nothing about the hide it sits on.
Is patent leather real leather?
The hide is real leather. The surface is not.
That distinction is the whole answer. What you touch, see and clean is a polymer film. What gives the piece its body and its ability to be cut and stitched is leather underneath.
There is also patent-finished synthetic, which has no hide at all and is common in footwear. And on a fully coated leather, there is very little left to tell them apart by.
The usual advice is to look at the cut edge, on the assumption that leather shows a fibrous edge and a synthetic shows a uniform plastic one. Modern microfibre synthetics are built on non-woven fibre backings and their cut edges look convincingly fibrous. That test has been overtaken.
The other familiar tests fail here for a more fundamental reason. Both of them depend on being able to reach the leather, and on a patent surface you cannot.
- Variation between panels is the usual sign of a hide, since hides differ from one another. But heavy pigment covers that variation, and patent covers it completely. Every panel matches every other, exactly as a synthetic does.
- Smell is the other standard test, and a sealed surface has nothing to give off. There is no route out through a continuous film.
So on patent leather specifically the honest answer is uncomfortable: at the surface there is almost no difference to find, because the surface is not leather in either case. It is a polymer film, and it is broadly the same polymer film whatever it was applied to.
Which is also why the distinction matters less than you would expect. The film will craze, go tacky and crack on the same schedule whether it was laid over a hide or over a textile backing. Nothing about being leather underneath protects the coating.
What being leather underneath does change is how long the substrate lasts once the film has gone, and how the piece behaves structurally in the meantime: how it takes a fold, how it holds a shape, how it survives being stitched and stressed at the corners. That is a real difference and it is the only one that matters here.
So if you are buying patent, the question is not how to spot real leather by looking. It is what is underneath, and the only way to know is to be told.
What patent leather is made of, and how it is made
A prepared hide receives several coats of the finishing material, each cured before the next, until the surface is entirely sealed and reflective. The film is then either left smooth or, in crinkle and crinkled patent, deliberately textured.
Because the coating is continuous, none of the leather's own character survives it. No grain reads through. No patina can form, since nothing reaches the fibre.
Why it is called patent leather
The name comes from the early nineteenth century, when the process was new. In the English of the period, describing something as patent meant it was a proprietary process claimed by its originator, and the phrase stuck to the material long after the process became common.
The version usually credited was developed in Newark, New Jersey, in 1818 by Seth Boyden, who produced the finish by applying varnish to leather and drying it in a particular way. What is less often mentioned is that the name does not appear to derive from any protection Boyden himself held.
Why patent leather gets sticky
This is the question every owner of patent leather eventually asks, and it has a real answer rather than the guesswork usually offered.
Two things happen to the film over time.
The plasticisers migrate. Flexible polymer films contain plasticisers to keep them supple. Over years these gradually move out of the film and to the surface, where they leave a tacky, slightly oily residue. This is why an old patent bag feels sticky to the touch while a new one does not, and why the stickiness returns after being wiped away.
The film absorbs moisture and breaks down. Polyurethane films are vulnerable to humidity over long periods, and warm damp storage accelerates it considerably.
Two consequences follow directly, and they are the reason conservators store coated materials the way they do. Never let two patent surfaces rest against one another, because they will adhere and pull away each other's finish. And store it ventilated, not sealed in plastic, because trapped humidity is what drives the breakdown.
Durability, cracking and lifespan
The same process explains cracking and discolouration. As the film loses its plasticisers it becomes less flexible, and a less flexible film on a material that bends will craze and then crack, always at the flex points first.
Patent leather is therefore a finish with a life rather than a finish that lasts. Kept cool, dry and ventilated it can look new for a very long time. Kept warm, humid and pressed against other surfaces, it will go sticky and then crack, and neither can be reversed.
There is no repairing a failed patent film. It can only be replaced.
Water, weather and wear
The coating is water resistant, which is genuinely useful. The stitching, the seams and the edges are not, and water that gets underneath the film has no route out.
Heat is the greater enemy. A hot car and a sunny window are the two most reliable ways to age patent leather quickly.
How to clean and care for patent leather
- Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth. Nothing abrasive.
- Dry immediately with a clean dry cloth.
- For stickiness, a light wipe removes the residue at the surface, though it will return.
- Restore shine with a product made for patent surfaces, or a trace of glass cleaner on a cloth, never applied directly.
- Do not use leather conditioner or oil. Oils do nothing for a polymer film and can soften or cloud it.
- Store it wrapped in a soft cloth, not in plastic, and never touching another patent surface.
Is patent leather in style?
It moves in and out, as high-shine materials always have. The more useful question for anyone buying is whether the piece is intended to be kept, because patent has a finite life in a way that a well-made vegetable tanned piece does not.
