The Saddle Stitch: How It Works and Why It Lasts
A saddle stitch is made by hand with two needles working a single thread. Both needles pass through the same hole from opposite sides, so the thread crosses itself inside every hole along the seam.
One thread, crossing itself, hole after hole. That is the whole of it, and every quality the stitch is known for comes from that one arrangement.
What a saddle stitch is
One length of thread, a needle at each end. The maker pierces or punches the holes first, then works along the seam: the right needle through, the left needle through the same hole from the other side, both pulled home, and on to the next.
Each hole ends up with two passes of thread crossing inside it. The stitch is not held by tension against a second thread, as a machine stitch is. It is held by itself.
How to saddle stitch, step by step
- Mark the stitch line with a groover or a wing divider, a consistent distance from the edge.
- Mark and make the holes with a pricking iron and an awl. Spacing matters more than anything else in the finished appearance.
- Cut the thread to roughly four times the seam length and wax it.
- Thread both needles and lock each one onto the thread so it cannot slip.
- Start one or two holes in from the end and back-stitch to that end, so the beginning is doubled.
- Work the stitch: right needle through, left needle through the same hole from the other side, passing behind the first thread the same way every time.
- Pull both ends home with equal tension. Consistency here is what makes a seam look handmade rather than homemade.
- Finish with two or three back-stitches, then trim and burnish or melt the ends according to the thread.
The part beginners underestimate is not the stitching. It is the hole spacing, decided before a single stitch is made and impossible to correct afterwards. Irons come in different spacings, usually described in stitches per inch or in millimetres between holes, and the choice sets the character of the finished seam: fine spacing reads as precise and formal, wider spacing as robust. Whatever you choose, keep it constant, and mark the line before you punch anything.
The second thing beginners get wrong is tension. Both hands pull with the same force, every stitch, or the seam wanders visibly. It is worth doing a practice run on an offcut before committing to the piece.
And the third is the order of the needles. Whichever needle you pass first, and whichever side you pass it behind, must be the same at every hole. Change it halfway and the stitch angle reverses, which shows immediately.
Tools and thread
Pricking iron to mark evenly spaced holes at a consistent angle. Awl to open each hole as you come to it. Two harness needles, blunt rather than sharp, so they pass through the hole without splitting the thread already in it. Linen thread, waxed, for traditional work; polyester where strength and consistency matter more than tradition.
Saddle stitch versus machine lockstitch
Both stitches interlock. That is not what separates them.
A machine lockstitch uses two separate threads: a needle thread from above and a bobbin thread from below. They interlock with each other in the middle of the material, one crossing per stitch, in a chain that runs the length of the seam. It is fast, extremely consistent and entirely adequate for most sewing.
A saddle stitch uses one continuous thread with a needle at each end. There is no second thread to lock against, because both passes are the same thread, crossing itself inside each hole before moving on.
So the question is not whether the stitch locks. It is what each lock depends on. In a lockstitch every crossing depends on the two threads staying under tension against one another along the run. In a saddle stitch each hole holds its own crossing of a single thread.
That geometry is what shows at the point of failure.

The claim usually made for saddle stitching is that a cut stitch stays put while a machine seam can run. The mechanism follows from the thread count. Sever a saddle stitch and you have two cut ends, each still crossed and held in the holes either side of the break. Sever one thread in a lockstitch and its partner has lost what it was locking against, and the crossings can be drawn out in sequence.
How far a given machine seam actually runs depends on the thread, the stitch length and the material, and a well-made machine seam is not fragile. So the honest version is that a saddle stitch is far more tolerant of local damage, not that a machine seam always unravels.
There is a second difference worth as much as the first, and it has nothing to do with failure. Because the holes are marked and punched before any stitching begins, their spacing, angle and distance from the edge are decided deliberately rather than by a machine's feed. And because the maker is pulling the thread by hand, a saddle stitch can use a heavier waxed thread than a machine will comfortably handle at that thickness. That is why hand-stitched seams look different at a glance, before anything has gone wrong at all.
Where saddle stitching is used, and where it is not
It is used where the seam is structural and where the piece is expected to be repaired rather than replaced: harness and saddlery, where the technique is named for, and fine leather goods where the seam is both a fastening and a visible statement of how the piece was made.
It is not used in volume manufacture, for the obvious reason. A hand-stitched seam takes a multiple of the time a machine needs, and that time is the cost.
Which is why a saddle-stitched seam signals something before you have looked at anything else on the piece. Nobody hand-stitches a bag they expect to be thrown away.
How to tell a hand saddle stitch from a machine seam
- Look at the angle of the stitches. A hand saddle stitch sits at a slight consistent diagonal, because the pricking iron marks the holes at an angle. Machine stitches sit straight along the line.
- Compare the two faces of the seam. A saddle stitch looks the same on both sides. A lockstitch often differs, with a slightly different tension or appearance underneath.
- Look at the thread thickness. Hand stitching generally uses a heavier thread than a machine can comfortably handle.
- Look for perfect regularity. A machine is flawless. A hand seam is very close to regular and not quite identical, and that small variation is the signature.
- Look at the ends of the seam. Hand work is back-stitched and finished by hand; machine work is usually reversed and cut.
